A Referee’s Greatest Call: Serving God and Others

For Deacon Steve Javie, generosity isn't just an act —it's a way of life, deeply rooted in the values he learned from his family and lived out through his Catholic faith. As a permanent deacon at Saint Andrew Parish in Newtown, Deacon Javie continues to embody a spirit of service and stewardship, faithfully using his blessings to support those most in need.

Growing up in a devout Catholic family in Manayunk, Mass attendance, regular confession, and a call to help others were simply part of everyday life. His uncle, Monsignor Anthony E. Jaworowski, served the Church of Philadelphia for over 70 years and left a profound example of vocation and compassion. "I was surrounded by strong, generous role models who believed you gave from whatever you had," Deacon Javie reflects.

Before answering his call to the diaconate, Deacon Javie lived a life many would describe as larger than life. A standout athlete, he played baseball at Temple University and went on to pitch in the Baltimore Orioles' minor league system. When an injury ended his baseball dreams, he pivoted—and found a new arena: the NBA.

For 25 years, Deacon Javie officiated at the highest level of professional basketball, working countless playoff games and NBA Finals. His calm demeanor, fairness, and authority on the court earned him widespread respect. Yet even as he stood under the bright lights of packed arenas, his faith remained his grounding center.

"Refereeing in the NBA taught me a lot about staying calm under pressure and learning humility — because you will make mistakes. Faith is the same way: it’s not about being perfect; it’s about perseverance, forgiveness, and serving others with love."

He and his wife, Mary Ellen, have spent years living those lessons off the court. Mary Ellen’s leadership as the former president of what is now the Legacy of Life Foundation has been a powerful extension of their shared mission, providing vital support to women facing crisis pregnancies. The Javies also support Generation Life, a movement that promotes chastity and the sanctity of life among young adults, and regularly contribute to the Catholic Charities Appeal, the Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal, and the SaintJohn Vianney Fund for Retired Priests.

"Without the Catholic Church’s outreach, so many hospitals, schools, and shelters simply wouldn't exist," Deacon Javie shares. "The Church does incredible work for society and the world. In our experience, The Catholic Foundation has been like the point guard — setting up the perfect assist, making it easy for us to give and reach the causes we care about most."

Along with many of Deacon Javie’s fellow deacons, The Javies have also supported The Catholic Foundation’s Permanent Diaconate Ministry Fund which provides independent and supplemental resources needed to build, enhance, and support the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Funds support a range of activities that flow from the deacon’s charisms of Word, Sacrament, and Charity -- from ministry and vocation awareness to continuing formation.

"We are deeply grateful to Deacon Javie and MaryEllen for their extraordinary generosity," said Ted Qualli, President and CEO of The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia. "Their unwavering commitment to living the faith through service and stewardship stands as a true inspiration. Their example calls each of us to remember the profound difference we can make when we respond with open hearts to God's call to give."

Reflecting on his journey, Deacon Javie sees a clear gameplan laid out by God—one rooted in gratitude, generosity, and faith. "The older I get, the more gratitude I feel for the people God placed in my life. Giving back is just the natural next play."

Whether officiating under the bright lights of the NBA or serving in the quiet moments of parish life, Deacon Javie has always stayed true to his calling: to live with a generous heart, and to pass that spirit of giving forward—one faithful step at a time.
